That was the sports commentator's catchphrase, today, as my alma mater, Davidson College emerged victorious from a tournament contest which their opponent, Georgetown University was heavily favored to win.
Not long ago, a friend told me that his son was considering applying for admission to Davidson. What follows is directly from my response to him. I'm posting it now, because after today's victory in men's basketball, someone besides me might actually care!

Davidson has evolved into the southern version of an Ivy League school. It was founded by Presbyterians, and despite having become secular, it places a lot of emphasis on developing character. It’s a small (1,700 students), liberal arts college – They make students take a lot of courses – not just their major, and emphasize writing and critical thinking skills. I think they once said that more Davidson graduates go on to get a PhD than any college in the country. I think Davidson has had the second highest number of Rhodes scholars of any school in the country.
Academically it’s tough, but it has amazing sports programs for a school of its size. Basketball was the #1 sport, when I was there. Davidson has made it to the NCAA a couple times when I was there and a couple times, since, but will probably never equal their heyday in the late 1960s, when Davidson made the Final 4 for several years, as Lefty Driesell coached Terry Holland and the team was ranked #1 by Sports Illustrated. Terry Holland is now the Athletic Director. Since then, Soccer has become big – bigger than football, and Davidson remains nationally ranked and has hosted the national championships, several times in the last decade. Women’s tennis is really big, too. I didn’t know that swimming was so big, until I started reading up – but then, I shouldn’t be surprised, because they opened a multi-million dollar sports complex with multiple swimming pools, the year after I left.
Davidson recently made news, when it announced that it would augment its financial aid program so that students entire demonstrated need would be met by grants and student employment, so that no student would need to take on educational debt.
The trustees are very conservative, while the faculty is very liberal. The students are all over the map, but probably, on average, more conservative than at most colleges of this caliber.
My freshman adviser told me, during my first week:
Those of you who make As at Davidson will go on to become college professors, because that’s what people who make As at Davidson do. Then there are those of you who will make Bs at Davidson—You will go to work for NCNB (now NationsBank), have your 2.3 kids, and park your BMW in your driveway, because that’s what people who make Bs at Davidson end up doing. Then there are those of you who will make Cs at Davidson – You’re going to be making money.
I’ve always enjoyed telling the story, which turns out to be more true than I would have ever believed. My final GPA at Davidson was 3.000, and ever since, I have been trying to dumb myself down enough to make the kind of money that the guys who made Cs are making.
